ABOUT MOSCOWMany travelers view Moscow, Russia, as a somewhat intimidating destination, but Moscow's rich history, culture, and architecture make it worthwhile for the adventurous tourist. Founded in the 12th century, Moscow became the center of political power in Russia, and it has since been shaped by war, revolution, and now economic development. Although Moscow, RU, is still brimming with historical monuments and architecture, modern skyscrapers increasingly punctuate the landscape.
The essential stop for visitors to Moscow is the Kremlin and Red Square. Not only is the Kremlin the oldest location in Moscow, but it is packed with fascinating exhibits like the Armory Palace and the Diamond Fund. Between the months of April and October, visitors to Red Square and the Kremlin can also attend one of the daily changing of the guard ceremonies.
Beginning just north of the Kremlin, Tverskaya Ulitsa is a more modern destination that is a must-see for tourists in Moscow. Dubbed the "Fifth Avenue of Moscow," Tverskaya Ulitsa offers a mish-mash of historical treasures like the statue of Yuri Dolgorukiy and the Central Telegraph Office, as well as modern shops and restaurants.
Architecturally-minded visitors to Moscow won't want to miss St. Basil's Cathedral, which is also conveniently located near Red Square. This onion-domed cathedral was commissioned in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate the conquest of the Tatars. Other architectural treasures in Moscow include Troitskaya Tower, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, and the Borovitskaya Tower, all of which are located in the heart of the city near the Kremlin.
After a long day of exploring Moscow's world-renowned tourist destinations, visitors can relax and celebrate in one of the many restaurants located near the Kremlin and Red Square. Metropol and the Café des Artistes offer continental cuisine, and Pirogi na Nikolskoy offers low-priced Eastern European favorites. |
